One fireplace accessory that is often overlooked or done improperly is the fireplace door. When installed correctly, they provide an elegant and practical touch to any fireplace. First of all, be aware of the materials that are used in your door. If they use brass or other metals, it is possible that the metal could become discolored after enough large fires burn in your fireplace, ruining both the doors and your interior decoration.

Secondly, keep in mind that while fireplace doors can be a wonderful addition to a fireplace, the doors are an accessory and as such should not become a nuisance for fireplace maintenance. You want to ensure that after you install the doors you can still easily remove ash and debris from the fireplace and maintain the fire.

Fireplace doors also have some functional value as well. Because so much energy and heat can be lost through a fireplace chimney, a pair of well-installed doors can seal the chimney when the fireplace is not in use, reducing your home heating bill. Additionally, when starting a fire or letting one smolder out (when you have the chimney flue open) the doors will continue to keep the heat inside and the cold outside where it belong. Many people think that the fireplace doors need to be shut at all times, but when you have a full fire going you can leave the doors open and probably should since leaving them closed will reduce the ability of the fireplace to heat the room. Also keep in mind that if you leave the doors closed when the fire is burning, they can become extremely hot and dangerous to the touch.

Though fireplace doors are a great addition to any fireplace, keep in mind that if they’re not the right size they won’t function properly (if at all).
